Isaac Kobla Gavor was born in 1984 in Vakpo, a village in the Volta Region of Ghana. He lost his father when he was about a year old.
He fought hard to have his basic education since his mother’s petty trade income was barely enough to support him.
His early interest and ability in art was fostered by observing a local artist and later had lessons from Senyo Art Studio in Ho, the capital of the Volta Region of Ghana. He learned to paint more by observation than tutelage. Isaac’s smartness and combined energy with talent earned him the nickname “zazae” meaning, “it’s smartness. Isaac managed to source funds from painting and decorating houses, kiosks, sign boards, writing on T-shirts, making banners etc., to enrol at Ghanatta College of Arts in Accra, the capital of Ghana where he learned Graphic Design. Nonetheless, friends and some ‘good Samaritans’ also supported him financially whiles studying.
His education at Ghanatta was eminent in his art career because it broadened his artistic character, had the opportunity to attend both national and international art fairs/exhibitions held in the capital. He also made friends with professional artists who offered him unsolicited suggestions and advice.
Isaac’s paintings express rather than illustrate feeling. He draws his inspirations from nature, everyday life of the African and other art works. He is involved in abstract, expressionism, cubism, surrealism and realism mostly rooted in African tribal mythology. He mostly paint on canvas using acrylic paints, making splashes, flexible brush strokes which always end up expressing and the observers/viewers marvel at his pieces.
Isaac believes in art, God is involved and every mistake is a brush stroke from God to unveil the hidden beauty and expression of the painting.
